This year, the Aptos Junior High School “testing window” for CAASPP administration is scheduled for April 30th to May 1st. All 7th and 8th grade students will be tested in 2 subjects: English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. Both grade level assessments include constructed response items, selected response items (multiple choice), and a performance task. All CAASPP assessments will be completed using Chromebooks (computers.) Additionally, 8th grade students will also sit for the 8th grade level Science Test, which will also be completed using Chromebooks.  8th grade science testing will be administered in the middle May through student’s science class period.

New this Year: There will be a modified bell schedule for the 2 day testing period (bell schedule will be posted on AJHS website). It is important to note, the modified bell schedule will impact the composition of the regular school day and will have an impact on our ending time of school.  On April 30th and May 1st, students will be dismissed at 1:05. Transportation will still be provided for those students who take district buses.  Students who walk/bike or are picked up would need to leave campus at this time as well. This schedule allows for a “Pure” testing schedule where students will have the opportunity to solely focus on their testing.  Make up assessments will be administered, as needed, during the the next two weeks that follow continued to completion. The assistant principal, Mr. Platt, will notify students that require make-up assessments. Passes will be sent for students that require make-up assessments, and attendance will be monitored at the student services office. We will do our best to balance our need to complete testing with our desire to be respectful of student needs, the academic demands of coursework, and the instructors.

NWEA/ Map Testing at AJHS 2017-18

In an effort to ensure that we are meeting the individual needs of our students, it is necessary to have an assessment that measures the academic growth of each student for each instructional year. To that end, the 2017-18 school year is the second year the NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Assessment) or MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) assessment is being administered by our District.  We’re excited to be able to utilize this assessment is a nationally-normed assessment that is meant to measure academic growth (skills based growth) in the areas of Mathematics and Reading. These assessments will be administered a total of three times throughout the school year so that we can measure growth obtained in an instructional year with a mid-year data point. The resultant data is used to gauge the attainment of content skills, and will be utilized by our District, school sites, and school site instructors to inform instruction and address the strengths and areas for growth of our student population through the use of the NWEA learning continuum.

Additionally, the resultant data will be used (1 of 3-4 placement criteria) for placement in both *Mathematics and English and Language Arts.

For more information, please visit the following links on the PVUSD Webpage.

MAP Assessment Administration Dates (Secondary Dates:)

  1. August 21st -September 1st 2017
  2. December 4th - December 15th 2017
  3. May 14th - May 25th 2018

*Please be sure to review both the 2017-18 PVUSD Middle School and High School Math Pathways attached to this email as reference (or linked at http://www.pvusd.net/math). These documents help to illustrate placement criteria for math placement at the Junior High and High School.

Sea Dragon Families,

Aptos High, Aptos Junior High, and our Aptos elementary schools are partnering for our annual LCAP input session on Tuesday November 28th, at 6:30 in the Aptos High Cafeteria.  Please join school administration, Superintendent Dr. Rodriguez, and other District officials to learn about where we are as a school and as a district and then gather your input on how to serve our students.  As a part of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) every school district in California is required to create a Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).  The LCAP is our district’s plan to meet annual goals for students.  Your participation in this process is very important.

We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, November 28th at 6:30 in the Aptos High School Cafeteria.

Sea Dragon Families,

Halloween is coming and we’re all getting excited about wearing costumes to school.  Please remember that costumes need to be in accordance with school and district guidelines. Please keep in mind student costumes cannot disrupt the educational program of the school.  Any costume deemed inappropriate will be called to the attention of the student’s parents and the student will be asked to change into appropriate clothes. School dress code guidelines can be found in student's binder reminder on page 6.
