A Sea Dragon’s Tale (1.2) 2014-2015

Principal’s Message

Though I have only been a member of the Aptos Junior High Family for a few weeks I have already had the good fortune to work closely with a number of our staff. Together, we have said farewell to longtime colleagues and friends and we have welcomed new faces to our campus. We have grappled with finalizing our master schedule and improved some of our longstanding processes and procedures that contribute to the basic fabric of Aptos Jr.  And though we are just beginning our school year, we have already accomplished much together.

So now as the formal beginning of our school year draws near, and we prepare to welcome your students, we are presented with a number of opportunities to define and in some cases redefine what it means to be a Sea Dragon. This year is a seminal year; it marks the arrival of the common core, the arrival of a new form of assessment, new standards, new practices, and even new definitions or descriptions of literacy. Fortunately, though change might be found nearly everywhere we look, what remains are those things that have always served as our guideposts or our sentinels; our belief that…

  • students come first, and decisions are made with their best interests in mind.
  • a challenging  and engaging curriculum, a caring staff and a connection to the community are vital to our student's success
  • a sincere concern and regard for the well-being of our students and the development of opportunities for engagement in both academic and pro social activities is essential to our work

Ultimately, despite the number of shifts that have affected teaching and learning, and schools and school systems as we know them, there are some things that remain constant. Teaching and learning have always been and will remain to be a collaborative effort, an endeavor that requires an investment and dedication from students, instructors, leaders and community members. The process of educating remains to be an endeavor that requires expectations to be clear so that they can be met or exceeded. Teaching remains to be an endeavor that requires a relationship: students must know their instructors and more importantly instructors must know their students.

So as we stand here together, poised for another beginning, I am excited by what is to come. I am moved by optimism and steadied by what I observe to be tradition and culture. We are invested. We are setting clear expectations. We will continue to build and develop relationships with our students, colleagues, and stakeholders.  As a result, I am excited and proud to be a Sea Dragon and I am eager to work to support your students, our staff and our community this coming school year.

The most economic and up to date information is always posted on our website. We encourage you to check the website often, as most likely you can get your questions answered there.

Additionally, the principal sends out a weekly email “newsletter” with important upcoming dates and information. It also occasionally includes helpful tips to work with your student.

School loop gives parents access to grades, attendance, teacher websites and more. All students and parents are encouraged to register for School Loop, which can be done through the main page of the school website at www.aptosjr.pvusd.net

Students are expected to dress appropriately and be properly groomed for school. Student dress does have an effect on behavior and attitude toward the learning environment.  Student dress cannot disrupt the educational program of the school.  Any attire or grooming habits deemed inappropriate will be called to the attention of the parents. If you have questions concerning the school dress code, please contact Richard Determan, Assistant Principal at 688-3234 or email him at: richard_determan@pvusd.net

We will begin at 6:00 pm in the gym with a short presentation on school activities for the year.

Information On The Web

For daily information on what is happening at Aptos Junior High please visit our WEB SITE at www.aptosjr.pvusd.net.

  • Additionally on the web site you can do the following:
    • Check Grades
    • Sign up for the email list
    • Check the school calendar
    • And much, much, more!

School Site council

This year we are in need of four School Site Council Members. If you are interested please send an email to rich_moran@pvusd.net. Please include your name, your child's name and a 75 words or less reason for running. If we receive more than 4 candidates we will hold a school wide parent vote.

SSC meetings will be held the 2nd Monday of each month from 3:30-4:30. Meetings start on 9/09. Because of holidays, there will be a few exceptions to the 2nd Monday date:

School Site Council member responsibility: Attend each meeting, review school plan and budgets with the principal, review pertinent school data such as test scores, discipline, demographics, etc. review district information, and other duties.

The Home and School club is the organization that helps run and mange fundraising opportunities, student incentive events, school beautification and “non-district” finances. Parents are encouraged to attend these meetings to help improve the overall quality of AJHS for our students.  Meetings will be held the 4th Monday of each month from 4:30-5:00 pm. We are looking for the following positions: President, VP and a secretary. The first meeting is 9/24.

Textbooks and Backpacks

At the beginning of each year there is always a concern about backpacks, the weight of our textbooks and the fact that students are moving with their backpacks from class to class. Students will be issued a locker by the second week of school. They will share this locker with another student. Our schedule is arranged in such a way that students have a break every two periods to visit their locker and exchange books. Teachers who have room in their classroom will allow students to store the textbook for that class. Our school budget cannot afford sets of books for each class. Parents may purchase, from the publisher, their own personal copy of a textbook that could remain at home. Ordering information is available from our librarian.

Students Arriving Early To School

Aptos Junior High does not have supervision of students at school until 8:00 am on regular school days. Students arriving before that time will be unsupervised and when the rainy season begins they will be out in the rain and cold. This concerns us and we are asking for your support in providing supervision for your children and not dropping them off at school before 8:00am on regular days.

Bus Transportation & Passes

Bus Passes will be available at the District Office at in the District Office Board room (294 Green Valley Rd. Watsonville, CA 95076) from July 28th 2014 through Friday, August 8th. Hours are as follows:  Monday-Thursday, 10:00 am-6:00pm, Friday from 8:00am-3:00 pm. Bus passes will also be available at the school site beginning the week of August 11th 2014 in the main office. Please be sure to make the check or money order out to PVUSD.

Information concerning bus stops and bus passes will be available when you pick-up your books and schedules. Bus passes are $20 and checks can be made out to the Pajaro Valley Unified School District (P.V.U.S.D.)

Parking Issues

In an effort to increase the safety of our students, staff at Aptos Junior High will be monitoring the parking lot before and after school. Please assist us in keeping your students safe by observing the following guidelines:

  1. Please drive forward to the gate where students will be dropped off to enter the school through the basketball courts.
  2. Students are not to exit the car until reaching the gate leading to the basketball courts. This will eliminate most of the congestion created by students exiting cars at the entrance to the school.
  3. Please make sure that your student is ready to go before you drop them off. If you need to have long conversations or write notes, etc. please find a parking spot. By doing this you will help us to move traffic along quickly.

Parent Messages To Students During School

Please make arrangements with your child before they arrive at school for any personal messages (don’t forget to stay for tutoring or sports, call me when you get home, don’t forget to feed the dog or cat etc.). If you have an emergency and need to get a message to your child the secretary will notify the student as soon as it is practical to do so. Students who have items delivered to the office by their parents will be sent a note to pick up the item during non-class time. The office is not responsible for these items. If your student is absent please call 708-8355 anytime.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher conferences are always arranged through the front office. When coming on campus all parents need to sign-in at the front office. For the safety of the students we have a closed campus and no one, including parents, is allowed on the campus without permission from the front office. If you wish to meet with a teacher these meetings are to be arranged by either contacting the teacher ahead of time or contacting Stacey Carroll (our new counselor) or Mr. Determan before meeting with the teacher. As a general practice if you would like to meet with all of your child’s teachers at once this meeting can be arranged through the counseling office. These meetings are usually held after school at a time that is mutually convenient for both parents and staff.

Resolving Problems and/or Complaints
The parents’ first contact in the event of a problem is always the child’s teacher.  Teachers are available for phone calls before and after school. Teachers can also be contacted by e-mail. If you have difficulty contacting a teacher please contact our counselor, Mrs. Carroll or our Assistant Principal.  Parent conferences may be set up at any time during the school year (please do not ask to conference with the teacher during class time).  The principal will enter into the problem-solving process only if the teacher and parent cannot develop a mutually agreeable solution.

Per district policy (#1306) the normal channel for complaints concerning school personnel shall be from complainant (student/parent/guardian) to employee (teacher/staff), to the principal, to the Assistant Superintendent, to the Superintendent, to the Governing Board.  Every effort will be made to satisfy the complaint at the earliest possible stage.  Complaints not resolved at the point of origin must be submitted in writing before further processing.

Respecting Our Neighbors

Please be respectful of our neighbors down at Surf City and The Palm Deli. While they appreciate the business, they have asked that parents and students be aware that business is being conducted and to not block parking spots or doorways.  Also please remind your students to pick up any litter that they may create and be respectful of the storeowners and customers that visit the businesses in this area.

Polo Drive:

When parking on Polo Drive please remember to pick up your trash and be respectful of the homes and people on Polo Drive.

Huntington Drive:

In the past we have received complaints from the community that our parents drive too fast on Huntington Drive and we have been asked to request that you not exceed 25 mph on this road.

Magazine Sale To Support Student Activities

Each year Aptos Junior High conducts a magazine sales fundraiser to support student activities. This year’s drive we will start on September 5th , and will end on September 24th . All of the funds raised in this sale of magazines are used for classroom supplies, equipment, technology, supporting sports activities, student awards, hiring of extra coaches, school dances, graduation activities, noontime activities, etc.  The Home and School Club has the responsibility of accounting for the distribution of the funds to meet the identified needs of the school. Our goal this year is to raise $15,000.

A Sea Dragons Tale

A Sea Dragon’s Tale (1.1)

A newsletter for our community

Welcome and Welcome Back:

Greetings Sea Dragon and Sea Dragon parents,

I am excited to have the privilege to address you all for the first time, in print, as the Principal of Aptos Junior High School. It has been an extremely eventful summer as the staff here readies itself for the coming school year. We are all working diligently addressing our facilities, staffing and curricular needs in an effort to ensure that we are well prepared to serve our community. Our transition is going very smoothly. Many members of our community have contributed to our work this summer but we would like to take this time to offer a special thanks to Mr. Brian Saxton for his generous assistance this summer.

Please take some time to review this year’s first newsletter, A Sea Dragon’s Tale. This first Tale is a “short tale” meant to provide you with a quick reference and information you’ll need to support your students as they prepare for the first day of school at Aptos Junior High School. A more robust Tale, containing much more detailed information meant to ensure your students success, will be delivered during the week of August 4th so be sure to be on the lookout.

Thank you all for taking the time to review this email and we look forward to seeing your student this coming school year. It promises to be a great year at Aptos Junior High School

Rich Moran,

Principal, Aptos Junior High School
